The Importance of Time Out

photo (10)

Last Friday, after I finished seeing all my clients, I drove up north to Bells at Killcare for some much needed ‘Me Time’. I checked in to the beautiful boutique hotel and couldn’t wait to indulge in some quiet time.

I slept, meditated, got massages, took Epsom salt baths, fell asleep by the pool, read, ate (the food is increible), watched a movie (which I never do) and slept in. It’s exactly what I needed.

As the year comes to an end, there is a definite sense of urgency in the air. Things need to be wrapped up, finished off, and deals closed. My six weeks of travel is about to kick off this Friday as I fly to Brisbane for Radical Self Love. Then Step It Up begins. I felt it was time for me to fully just be in the peace and quiet.

It takes courage to say, “I need space!” and to admit you need some time out.

photo (9)

Usually, what happens is: your mean girl will pipe up and say, “You don’t deserve it!”, “Who do you think you are, taking time for yourself?”, “Man up and keep going!”

Catch that mean girl talk and remind yourself: Yes! You do deserve it, and, yes, you are worthy of time out!

Now, what your time out looks like may be completely different from mine. Yours could be simply having a cuppa in the sun for fifteen minutes, or going to the movies alone, or taking yourself to the park with a book, or running yourself a bath.

Whatever it is for you is perfect. The point for me was to leave my computer at home and turn my phone on silent and just be… Which I did!

We are so easily stimulated these days. Being a blogger I spend a s#@t load of time behind my computer and phone. To be honest, I really need that regular time away from technology.

I am extremely sensitive on all levels and get very stimulated by emails, social media, and comments. I regularly need to step away and close the lid on my Mac.

It takes balls to step away from something you love so dearly. My business is my baby, my love. But, there is no business without me. And in order for me to best serve you, I have to top myself up, give back to me, and fill myself up to the brim so that I am overflowing with love.

It is only then that I can truly give to others. If I am not full, I will be giving from the wrong space.

In order for me to be the best version of me, I have to give back to me first and foremost.

The same is true with you, my love. In order for you to be the best girlfriend, boyfriend, companion, confidante, employer, employee, work colleague, Mum, Dad, boss, sister, brother, son, or daughter you have to fill yourself up first.

So, share with me in the comments below one thing you are going to do for yourself today.

Notox Box Giveaway

Sharon Chung Profile

I met Sharon (the owner of Notox Box) a while back and loved what she was doing. So much so that I want to offer you a chance to get your hands on one.

But first…….

What is Notox Box?

Notox Box is about living your best life through health & happiness.

We’re passionate about helping people find the best in healthy and eco living.  We really wanted to create a place where it would be easy to find safer, better products.

We read the labels, check the ingredients, talk to the makers and test all the products to find the best health food, superfoods, natural skincare, and non toxic home products.

Why did you start Notox Box?

I started Notox Box to create a positive encouraging space to help people on their own health & wellness journeys.

The idea for Notox Box came about as I was dealing with chemical sensitivities and food intolerances. I was lacking energy, dealing with severe stomach pains, and breaking out in rashes & eczema. After seeing doctors, dermatologists, nutritionists, and a range of holistic practitioners, I slowly built my knowledge, and replaced my products. But it was overwhelming, and it was difficult to find good products. Along the way, I found so many busy people wanting to be healthy but also finding it hard. I thought there had to be an easier way.  I couldn’t find it, so I set out to create it.

Why is living a healthy toxic free life important?

Living a healthy toxic free life means living the best life possible. Someone said to me we are all on a quest to find HAPPINESS. And I think when we look after our bodies, each other and our planet, we are on the way to finding ultimate happiness.

For someone just starting on their health journey what are your top 5 tips to help them on their way?

  1. Start – The hardest part is starting. So just start small, and build on what you do every day. It may be taking time out for a walk, trying organic food, switching your lipstick.  Find out what works for you, and do a little more every day.  You’re much likely to stick with it that way.

  1. Nurture your body – Often we ignore what our body is telling us, or we’re so busy that we forget to look after ourselves. When you stay in tune with what your body needs, you’ll feel so much better and wonder why you didn’t do this before.

  1. Get inspired – I’m always amazed at how generous people are in sharing their stories – I love listening to the challenges they’ve overcome, how healthy living has changed their lives, and the positive road ahead. It really keeps me inspired and on track to bring people more healthy lifestyle options. Set goals and find what keeps you inspired.

  1. Learn, learn, learn – I find I never stop learning. Whether it is reading labels or the latest research, talking to people, hearing from others on their latest experiences and best finds, getting help from experts & friends, and sharing with others. It’s all part of discovering the best way to stay healthy and happy.

  1. Turn crappy to happy – Positive energy is such an amazing thing! Don’t beat yourself up if you have setbacks. The most important part is yet to come – how you deal with them. It’s amazing what a smile, a laugh and a good deep breath can do!  Combined, they’re like a reset button for me.  Surround yourself with positive people, do the things you love, and LOVE your life.

What is the most popular product?

Notox Box - Kids Box

Our signature Notox Box – it’s a great way to try a range of healthy and eco products. It’s a subscription box, so we handpick 5-10 of the latest health & wellness products and deliver them to you every month, to try at home.  We share lots of tips, and if you like the products, it’s easy to find them again in store.

What is the future for Notox Box?

We’d love to keep helping people discover, nurture and relish a healthy & happy life.

Ooooby Love (+ A Giveaway)

oooobyboxThose of you who follow me on Instagram will know that I head to the farmers’ markets most Saturdays to stock up on all my fresh, organic produce for the week. As well as my market shopping, I get a weekly delivery from Ooooby.

Ooooby (Out Of Our Own Backyard) delivers fresh, local, organic produce straight to your front door. Every week’s delivery is different depending on what’s in seasons. I love opening the box and seeing what little surprises I have that week. The best thing about it is that it forces you to get creative and try things you have not tasted or cooked with before.

Why I love Ooooby:

  • 50% of retail value goes straight back to the farmer’.
  • Profits are being reinvested into local food production.
  • You get complete honesty about where your produce comes from.
  • Produce is direct from our local farms around Sydney (rarely do they need to tap a little further, but all within NSW…only exotic fruits might need to be sourced from Queensland if they can’t find any at the top of NSW.
  • Last weeks as well as this weeks box was and is sourced only from 90km distance max.

Getting an Ooooby box delivered to your door is a great idea if you are ‘too busy’ and don’t have time to get to the markets. It’s also great if you have been away for work or on holidays. I always order my box and make sure it arrives at home as soon as I do. That way I always have delicious produce in my fridge as soon as I get home.

Don’t let being busy or the excuse of not having enough time stop you from nourishing yourself.

COMPETITION TIME

I love Ooooby so much that I am going to be giving away a box every month for the rest of the year to one lucky winner each month. How cool is that!

How to enter:

Take a photo of you cooking a meal using fresh, in-season produce and post it on Instagram using the tags #ooooby #pathtowellness and #pathtowellnesslovesoooobycomp

The first winner will be announced in my newsletter this Friday 27th of September. Then again on the last Friday of every month for the rest of the year.

Good luck and I can’t wait to see your photos.

Guest post by Amber Lestrange

Essential Oil Consultant (and good friend of mine) Amber Lestrange shares her winter survival guide with us featuring these 5 DoTERRA essential oils:

  • On Guard
  • Wild Orange
  • Wintergreen
  • Lavender
  • Ginger

Please note: DoTERRA oils are three grade tested, Certified, pure, therapeutic grade (quality that exceeds organic) therefore SOME may be suitable for ingestion. Please do not attempt to ingest other brands of oils as the quality may not support this.

1. On Guard

This blend of Wild Orange, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Bark, Rosemary and Eucalyptus has been designed to kill harmful bacteria, mold and viruses. It is the ideal Immune defense potion for the cold months of winter. Cold and flu’s will find it very difficult to get past ‘On Gaurds’ properties of:

  • Antibacterial
  • Anti antibacterial
  • Anti fungal
  • Antidepressant
  • Antiviral
  • Anti parasitic
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Immune stimulant
  • Antidepressant
  • Antiviral

This oil can be used as 2-3 drops in a vegetable capsule and swallow like a vitamin.

Diffuse in an oil burner/ aromatic diffuser periodically for 20-25 mins to help protect the body from the onset of flu’s, colds and viruses.

Gargle the oil with water to kill germs in the throat

Massage throat (stimulates immune system), stomach, under the arms (stimulate lymphatic system) or bottoms of feet for skin to absorb readily in to the blood stream. Dilute one drop in 15 drops of coconut oil.

2. Wild Orange

This is a calming and uplifting oil, helpful to beat to blues and gloom’s winter may bring on. It assists the digestive system, immune systems, skin and ones emotional balance.

It may also help with insomnia and nervousness.

Its properties include:

  • Anticancer
  • Antidepressant
  • Antiseptic
  • Antispasmodic
  • Digestive
  • Sedative
  • Tonic

This is my favorite oils to infuse my daily water intake with and add to smoothies for a delicious and invigorating flavor.

A few drops in an oil burner/aromatic diffuser will fill the room, mind and body with its uplifting properties.

Topically applied (no dilution needed) to the reflex points, or points of concern, for instant absorption.

3. Wintergreen

This oil is perfect to help battle the bodies aches and pains that may follow with Winter. It has a strong aroma and this sent/flavor has been synthetically replicated and used in root beer, toothpaste and chewing gum. This oil also elevates, opens and increases awareness in the sensory system.

Its primary uses are:

  • Arthritic pain
  • Bone pain
  • Cartilage injury
  • Dandruff
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Joint Pain
  • Muscular Development
  • Muscle tone

Enjoy this oil topically, in a carrier oil such as coconut oil or almond oil and apply to reflex points or area of concern.

Wintergreen may also be used in a diffuser

Note: Avoid when pregnant

4. Lavender

This is an all time favourite oil that people have turned to for centuries for its soothing and healing properties. In my opinion, nothing beats a long warm bath with lavender oil (in a carrier oil) during Winter nights.

The list is too long to mention all its properties so i will say but a few. Lavender will keep your skin hydrated and healthy in months when cracking and drying out could be an issue.

Its main medicinal property is balancing the body and working wherever there is a need.

It works on the cardiovascular system, emotional balance, nervous system and skin.

It is known to help with the following:

  • Acne
  • Allergies
  • Flatulence
  • Lymphatic drainage
  • Mouth abscesses
  • Thrush
  • Anxiety
  • Bronchitis
  • Cold sores
  • Gallstones
  • Reliving headaches
  • Reducing high blood pressure
  • Hives
  • Insect bites
  • Mental clarity
  • Skin conditions
  • Throat infections

It can be applied directly to the skin or with a carrier oil if one wishes to spread it thin. Diffused aromatically and also a drop in a teaspoon full of honey for ingestion. I cook lavender, adding a drop or two to chocolate recipes.

5. Ginger

A cup of warm water and a drop of Ginger Essential Oil makes for a warming digestive aid and immune supporting tea.

Help your digestive system move those heavier meals through with this oil. This is also a great oil tocook with. Add to a stir fry, cooked fish or salad dressings to enjoy taking your medicine even more!

Aromatically diffused, this oil may help influence physical energy, love. money and courage.

Its main properties are:

  • Antiseptic
  • Laxative
  • Stimulent
  • Tonic
  • Warming

You can purchase these oils here.

What are your fav essential oils you use?

As most of you know, I was in Melbourne last week holding my first Me, Myself & Winter Event. Talk about SO MUCH FUN! I can’t wait to meet all the Sydney babes this Saturday. Have you got your ticket yet? We are almost sold out. Be quick and get your ticket here.

Anyway, back to what I wanted to talk to you guys about today:

I travel quite a lot. In the past, this used to give me anxiety. For someone who loves to eat organic and as healthy as possible, not being in my home with my juicer, Vitamix, and all my own organic food would stress me out—to the point where I wouldn’t travel just because I didn’t want to let go of that control and be out of my comfort zone.

Talk about a control freak!

I could stay locked up in the safety of my own home for the rest of my life. Or, I could choose to let this go and travel, see the world, and experience life.

I chose the latter ;)

Over the past three years, I have learnt ways to stay healthier whilst travelling. I want to share them with you.

  • Do a call out on social media.

Whenever I travel, I always ask people on Twitter and Facebook to recommend their favourite organic/ healthy places to eat, which I add to a list.

  • Google it.

Before you get to your destination, make a list in your phone of all the organic and healthy places to eat in the area. Then, you’re ready to go when you land.

  • Stay close.

I always book my accommodations close to a health food store or an organic farmers’ market. In Melbourne, I stayed across the road from a health food store and the Prahran Market. So, I had access to organic food all the time.

  • Be prepared.

Take a few essentials with you such as: activated nuts and seeds, almond butter, some apples, herbal teas, chlorophyll, and flax crackers.

  • Just ask.

Whenever I went to a café or restaurant, I spoke to the wait staff about my dietary requirements and politely asked if they could suggest the best thing on the menu for me. FYI – Most restaurants add sugar to EVERYTHING. Every sauce and dressing! Even the grilled, wild-caught barramundi had sugar in it. I know crazy huh! I couldn’t believe it! But, then again, it doesn’t surprise me.

So don’t be fooled! I always call up beforehand and mention my requirements to make sure they won’t have a problem with it. Because I asked so politely, no one had ever did.

These are some of the ways I stay well whilst I travel.

Do you have any to share with the tribe? If so, let us know in the comments below. We would love to hear from you, gorgeous!

I recently had the pleasure of meeting my soul sister, Lorna Jane, at her recent book launch of MORE. I have been writing for Move Nourish Believe which you can read here, here, here, and here. So, getting to meet Lorna in person was very exciting.

This woman is incredible! She is inspiring and so real. I was gobsmacked by her authenticity and blown away by her passion for her business philosophy: Move Nourish Believe. She really walks her talk. Lorna is a shining example of what she preaches about living and active life.

At the launch breakfast, we sat sipping green juice whilst Lorna shared her passion and the inspiration behind writing her second book. She also shared tips and tricks for staying healthy, fit, and looking as amazing as she does.

I sped through the book in a week and was literally devastated every time I had to put it down to go to sleep.

More is overflowing with amazing healthy recipes, workouts, tips, tricks, affirmations, beautiful and inspiring images, plus loads more.

I was lucky enough to get to ask Lorna some questions about More.

What was the inspiration behind MORE?

After writing my first book and sharing my Move, Nourish, Believe Philosophy with my readers, I found that I was constantly being asked for a deeper insight into my way of life. I was receiving questions on a daily basis about Active Living and MNB, so I knew I had to answer them, and that is how MORE came to be.

Was it hard being so open and honest about yourself in MORE?

I think it always takes courage to put yourself on the line and share so much of your life but for me, I feel this is what I am here to do…I want to inspire women to be fitter and healthier and to live their most fulfilling active life. I want women to discover how they too can enjoy nourishing foods on a daily basis, make exercise a ritual, and beam positivity every day. To know I have the opportunity to empower other women to think and be at their best is something I am thankful for every single day!

What was the best part about writing MORE?

The best part was simply allowing myself the freedom to collect all of my favourite inspirations, learnings, thoughts and stories, and then present them in a creative way that is so much about what I love and believe in. I am so proud of this book because I feel like each and every page has been lovingly put together by myself and my creative team to truly express my heart-felt beliefs in an authentic and personal way.

What was the hardest part about writing MORE?

There wasn’t enough pages! It was surprisingly hard to condense all of my thoughts and ideas into just over 200 pages. But then again, that just means I still have more to share!

How long did the whole process from writing it to seeing it in print take?

I started the writing process less than six months ago but I am constantly collecting inspiration and ideas so it was really just a case of deciding what were the most important messages and then putting them in an order that made sense. Our team works incredibly fast and we turned the project around in record time. No doubt there were many late nights and working through the weekends but once I get started I really find it hard to switch off … that’s the best thing about writing … you really can do it anywhere and anytime!

If there was one thing you want your audience to take away from MORE what would it be?

That they too can create a life that they truly love! I want readers to put down this book feeling inspired, rejuvenated and excited to live active every day.

What piece of advice would you tell your 14-year-old self?

Find what you LOVE to do, what you are truly passionate about and then find a way to do it every single day with gusto.

One thing I love about MORE is how aesthetically pleasing it is. Did you have total control over the layout, images and how you looks?

Absolutely! I knew from the very beginning exactly how I wanted it to look. I wanted every page to be filled with beautiful images, typography, illustrations and textures so the reader would be taken on an emotional and inspiring journey. To say I am a control freak is an understatement, with everything I do I have to have  complete control, but I truly believe that it’s the only way I’m able to create a true reflection of myself, my life and my ideas.

What are you hopes and dreams for MORE?

It’s simple really… for women to treasure MORE and find the answers they’re looking for to start leading their best, most beautiful lives.

More is a beautiful book, which you can get here. You will keep it on display and refer to all the time. Check it out and let me know what you think.

If you have read it yet, I would love to hear your thoughts, beautiful. Share with me in the comments below.

In the past, as soon as winter hit, I would go into hibernation mode. I feel the cold a lot. I am the type of person that would have the heater sitting at my feet at my desk whilst I sit with a blanket wrapped around my shoulders. I would keep all the windows and doors closed and pretty much become a hermit.

The space in which you spend most your time—whether it is your home or your office—is so important that I’ve even dedicated a whole chapter to it in my book 12 Steps to Wellness. I explain that we are not only what we eat, drink, and use topically on our skin but also what we breathe in. Most of us will breathe the equivalent of over 11000 litres of air each day. This will substantially increase if we are exerting our bodies through exercise or other physical activities. So, it makes sense to spend as much time as we can in spaces filled with clean, fresh air, loads of natural light, and as toxic free as possible. Right!? But most people don’t. They leave their cluttered, messy home, jump into a dirty, smelly car, bus, or train and sit in a grey, dark cubicle on a near windowless floor all day long. Then, they jump back into that smelly car, bus or train and back into their messy, cluttered home. This is hardly inspiring or good for your health and happiness.

Here are 5 ways to detox your home and prepare your wellness sanctuary for winter:

  • Fresh Air

Open your windows every day (even in the middle of winter). This will allow fresh oxygen to fill the space and reduce the number of toxins floating around.

  • Get Plants

Plants take in the toxic chemicals through their leaves, roots, and even the soil they sit. They, thus, remove many of the toxic vapours that may be lurking about. Try peace lily, Boston fern, chrysanthemum, philodendron, and spider plants.

  • Use Organic Cleaning Products

Most cleaning products are loaded with highly toxic chemicals that you really shouldn’t be breathing in all day long. Get organic products. Even better: Make your own using essential oils and water.

  • Let There Be Light

Open the blinds and let in as much natural light as possible. This will stop mould from building up. Mould is highly toxic and you shouldn’t be breathing it in. If you have mould forming in your bathroom or home, don’t ignore it. Don’t something about it ASAP. Try Tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract and vinegar.

  • Bedding

Wash your sheets at least once a week and replace your pillows every year to stop mites and bacteria from growing.

  • Quit using Candles, Incense and Room Sprays

Most of these are loaded with highly toxic chemicals that, again, you don’t really want to be breathing in all day long. Get soy or beeswax candles, natural toxic-free incense and burn organic essential oils instead of room sprays.

  • Clean

I know this might sound silly but do a thorough, deep clean at least once a week with organic cleaning products to remove any toxics. A once-every-two-week clean really isn’t good enough. Set aside one hour per week to make your home and office sparkle. If you don’t like doing it, hire a cleaner.

  • Kick off Your Shoes

We bring loads of toxins from the outside world into our home and office on our shoes.  So, make sure you kick them off at the door and leave them there or carry them inside and put them in your wardrobe.

I go into much more depth in my book 12 Steps to Wellness. Plus, I give you loads of action steps to take immediately to create your wellness sanctuary. So, jump over and get your copy now!

Now over to you, gorgeous! Join in the conversation. Have you got any other tips you can add to the list?
